Top 5 Mobile App Designs of Summer 2021

July 8, 2021

With summer finally here, it’s time to take stock of amazing mobile app designs that have popped up over the last few months. Let’s get right into the five we chose for the summer 2021 edition of the top mobile app designs.

1. Nextdoor by Nextdoor

As we get a glimpse of light at the end of the pandemic tunnel, many people are excited to further connect with their local communities. Nextdoor is an app that facilities discussions, polls, and commerce amongst neighbors. It offers a largely card and photo-based mobile app design that helps users discover small businesses and get a pulse check on their neighborhood. One feature that is particularly well-designed and good for neighbors who want to meet new people is called Groups. It breaks the screen into several parts to first let users search for new groups, swipe right through and accept group invites, then swipe up to see which groups the user is in or near.

2. Struum by TVPass, Inc.

With so many streaming services out there, it was only a matter of time before entrepreneurs bundled them in one app. That’s exactly what Struum does: it provides content from over 50 streaming services and includes it for one monthly price. Beyond its utility, it also offers a clean mobile app design with a muted purple color scheme. The app’s functionality is a bit confusing in that you have allotted credits and use them to watch movies, tv shows, and shorts. But it does create an interesting user experience because content that you’ve spent credits on expire at a certain point. Instead of holding onto content in your queue forever, it visually incentivizes users to watch the content they’ve selected. With the amount of time, many of us spent glued to our couches watching television during the pandemic, watching less and higher quality content might be good for us all.

3. Wakeout! by Andres Canella

After countless months working from home, many of us have had to get creative to make sure we’re staying active. Wakeout is a fun way to build mini-workouts into your day to keep your blood pumping and brain working better. The mobile app design helps users pick activities based on where they are, such as home or work, and builds out an activity plan. Besides the colorful location icons, the app follows a fresh white, green, and orange color scheme. Each activity features a tutorial by a real person to make it easier than ever to be mindful about how long and how often you’re being active.

4. SketchAR by SketchAR

SketchAR is, first and foremost, a drawing app. While helping artists make their creations, they can also automatically take timelapse videos that help with promotion later on. And it even helps with turning that art into NFTs (nonfungible tokens) to sell their one-of-a-kind pieces. There are seriously limitless options with this mobile app interface: you can create Snapchat filters, turn photos into art, and even take classes in popular art styles. The mobile app design somehow crams all of these features into a clean layout that offers a minimal white background with purple accents.

5. Dog Scanner by Siwalu Software GmbH

Last, but not least, we have a funny mobile app design. Have you ever seen a dog breed you’ve never noticed before? This mobile app helps users snap a picture and identify dogs from over 370 breeds. If the dog is a mix, it will even break down the breeds it thinks the dog is. It will even allow you to upload pictures of humans to see what dogs they look most like. With a gamification aspect (who wouldn’t want to spot all 370 breeds over time?) and a feed of cute dog pictures, there’s a lot to love. The interface has a simple design that prominently features the pup pictures and a simple palette of white, blues, and greens.
